Conference Grant
Fall 2025 Applications Now Open!
Please note that applications for Summer 2025 conferences (i.e., conferences taking place between May 1 and August 31, 2025) are now closed. We are now accepting applications for conferences taking place during the Fall 2025 semester and later.
Looking to attend a conference but your finances are preventing you from doing so? The DEGS Conference Grant is here to help!
The purpose of this grant is to provide an additional means of funding to engineering graduate students who are presenting at or participating in a conference. Eligible students can request funding up to the following amounts: $200 for conferences within Nova Scotia, $500 for conferences within Canada (outside Nova Scotia), and $700 for conferences outside Canada.
Please note that:
Applicants must attend the conference in person and be directly involved in the conference presentation or participation.
Grants cannot be used to cover expenses incurred by other individuals, even if presenting on the applicant’s behalf.
In the event of unexpected circumstances (e.g., illness) that prevent in-person attendance, applicants must notify DEGS Council in writing as soon as possible. Exceptions may be considered on a case-by-case basis but are not guaranteed.
Applications must include supporting documentation such as a registration receipt, travel/accommodation receipts, and proof of participation (e.g., a conference program listing the applicant as a presenter or author). Applications without this documentation will be considered incomplete and ineligible for funding.
The final monetary amount awarded to successful applicants is determined by DEGS Council members during Council Meeting(s) and cannot exceed the expenses incurred by attending the conference. The amount of funding awarded is dependent on the financial needs of the applicant, the completion of the grant application, and the available DEGS funding remaining. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
Eligibility:
To qualify for a DEGS Conference Grant, applicants must satisfy the following requirements:
1. Applicants must be engineering graduate students at Dalhousie University at the time of the grant submission and at the time of the conference.
2. Applicants must be participating (authorship on a poster and/or presentation at the conference) or presenting at a conference related to their graduate studies.
3. Applicants must not have previously received a DEGS Conference Grant in the current academic year (September to August).
4. Applications must be submitted no later than one month after the start date of the conference.
